Local area walk

As part of our Geography lessons this half term, we have been learning about Yardley, our local area. On Wednesday 21st October we went for a walk from school to St Edburgha's Church.  In order to get there, we had to follow the route on the map.

We were very good at finding where we were on our maps.  We were also able to decide whether we had to turn left or right.

We had to cross some very busy roads, but we were very sensible and stayed in our groups and waited for an adult to tell us it was safe.

Finally we could see the park!  Through the park, behind the trees, we caught sight of St Edburgha's Church.  It looked very beautiful with all of the autumn leaves around.

We enjoyed walking through the park.  It was a shame we didn't have time to stop and play but we all know the way to the park so we are going to tell our parents about it.

St Edburgha's Church and the surrounding buildings were beautiful.  We enjoyed spending some time looking at them.

We decided that this was the perfect place in Yardely for Miss Bowkett to get married!

Can anyone remember what Miss Afridi told us about these marks on the church wall?

Which member of staff helped to plant this tree?

Our final challenge was to use our maps to get us back to school!  We really enjoyed our afternoon around Yardley.

Throwing and Catching

In PE this week, we continued to work on our throwing and catching skills.

We started by using a beanbag.  We balanced the beanbag on our head and then let it drop off into our hands.  We found it quite easy to catch the beanbag.

Then, Mr Simmons showed us how to make our hands ready for catching.  He said it was important to keep our hands in an open position.

Liah used Mr Simmons' hands to demonstrate how the ball fits in more easily if they are open.  If the hands are closed, the ball bounces off and is difficult to catch.

We then used a tennis ball to practise different throwing and catching techniques.  We found it much more difficult with a ball than a beanbag because the balls kept rolling away!

Number bonds to 6

In Maths this week we have been thinking about the number 6.

First of all we had to count the cubes carefully to make sure that there were six on every plate.

Then we shared our six cubes between two plates.  We looked at how many were on each plate and created a number sentence to match.

Rico worked really hard on his own to create these sentences to show number bonds to six.

Where do you live?

In Geography, Miss Bowkett asked us the question, 'Where do you live?'

We had time to discuss this with our talk partners and then we shared some of our answers.  Here are some of the things we discussed:

"I live in a house."  Cole

"I live in England."  Ismah

"I live in Birmingham."  Aiden

"I live in England but some of my family live in a different country called Pakistan."  Fatima

We then talked about different countries and discussed how England is a small country that is part of a group of countries called the United Kingdom (UK).  We located England on a globe.

After that, we looked at the UK in more detail.  We labelled the countries that it was made up of.
Can you remember where these countries are on the map?
- England
- Scotland
-Wales
-Northern Ireland

Next we thought about cities.  We all knew that we live in Birmingham so we talked about how this was just part of England.  We also learned that each country has it's own capital city.  These are the main cities for each country.  We labelled the capital cities of the UK on our map.

Can you remember the answers to these questions?
- What is the capital city of England?
- Which country has Edinburgh as its capital?
- What is the capital city of Wales called?
- Which country has Belfast as its capital?

We then labelled our own map and wrote some sentences to explain which capital city belonged to each country in the UK.
